How to Measure a Child’s Feet to Choose the Correct Shoe Size
Choosing the correct shoe size for a child is essential for their podiatric health. Shoes that don’t fit properly can hinder proper foot growth and even affect their posture. That’s why accurately measuring a child’s feet is crucial to ensuring healthy development. From Beberlis, as professionals in the manufacture of these products, we give you the following advice.
When Is the Best Time to Measure Feet?
- In the afternoon: Feet tend to swell slightly throughout the day, so measuring them in the afternoon will provide the most accurate size.
- With socks: If the child will wear socks with the shoes, make sure to measure their feet while wearing them. This will prevent the shoes from being too tight.
Steps to Measure a Child’s Feet
- Place the paper on a flat surface: Ensure the paper is on a firm, level floor.
- Have the child stand on the paper: The foot should be fully supported, and the child should stand rather than sit, to reflect the real size of the foot under pressure.
- Trace the foot outline: Carefully trace around the foot with the pen, keeping the pen perpendicular to the paper to avoid inaccurate measurements.
- Measure the length: Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure from the heel to the longest toe (which may not always be the big toe).
- Measure both feet: It’s common for one foot to be slightly larger than the other. Use the measurement of the larger foot to determine the shoe size.
How to Choose the Correct Size
Once you have the measurements, refer to the manufacturer’s size chart. Keep in mind that sizes may vary between brands or countries, so always double-check.
- Allow some extra room: Add 0.5 to 1 cm to the foot measurement to ensure there’s enough space for movement and growth.
- Try the shoes on: Whenever possible, have the child try on the shoes before purchasing. Check for adequate space at the toes and a snug fit at the heel.

Signs the Shoes Are the Right Size
- Toe space: There should be about a finger’s width (0.5–1 cm) between the longest toe and the tip of the shoe.
- Heel fit: The heel should be firmly supported without causing pressure.
- Walking comfort: Observe the child walking. If they drag their feet or appear uncomfortable, the shoes might not be the right fit.
Check Every Three to Four Months
Children’s feet grow quickly, so it’s recommended to measure them every three to four months to ensure they are still wearing the correct size.
