Shoe manufacturing in the Alicante region began to stand out around the middle of the 19th century, but it reached its true popularity and boom throughout the 20th century.
The definitive leap in the auxiliary industry took place in Alicante in the sixties, especially in the cities of Elche, Elda and Villena. These towns manufactured more than 70% of the national footwear and one out of every four shoes used in Europe.
